A NEW DISNEY PEARL CD OF GEORGE AND IRA GERSHWIN CLASSICS SET FOR RELEASE 6TH SEPTEMBER
HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE TWO NEW SONGS WILSON CRAFTED FROM PREVIOUSLY UNPUBLISHED GEORGE GERSHWIN MUSIC
It’s an unprecedented meeting of two legendary musical minds, separated by 70 years. Pioneering musical genius Brian Wilson, co-founder of the Beach Boys, has teamed up with George Gershwin, in Wilson’s Disney Pearl debut CD, Brian Wilson Reimagines Gershwin. Featuring timeless classics like "Rhapsody in Blue," "I Got Rhythm" and "Summertime," the album makes history with "The Like in I Love You" and "Nothing But Love," two new songs Wilson crafted from never-before-published music by Gershwin. Wilson Reimagines Gershwin arrives at stores and online retailers on September 6th, with a special vinyl edition set for release August 24.
Said Wilson, “Along with Irving Berlin, Gershwin basically invented the popular song, but he did something more. He had a gift for melody that nobody has ever equaled, yet his music is timeless and always accessible. This is the most spiritual project I've ever worked on.”
Produced by Brian Wilson, mixed by multi-Grammy® winner Al Schmitt and joined by his longtime acclaimed band, the new album features the trademark stacked vocal harmonies and orchestrations that made Wilson a towering and revered figure in popular music. Songs include his Gershwin favorites, such as "Summertime," "I Loves You, Porgy," "I Got Plenty o’ Nuttin’" and "It Ain’t Necessarily So" (all from the opera "Porgy and Bess”), "’S Wonderful," "I’ve Got a Crush on You," and "They Can’t Take That Away From Me." An a capella version of the groundbreaking 1924 orchestral piece "Rhapsody in Blue,” showcasing Wilson's stunning vocal harmonies, opens and closes the album.
Sure to draw passionate interest from music scholars and fans alike are the songs with "The Like in I Love You" and "Nothing But Love." The former is drawn from “Will You Remember Me?,” a song Gershwin composed in 1924 for the musical “Lady, Be Good!,” which never made it into the show. The latter is based on “Say My Say,” a 1929 song fragment the Gershwin brothers never fully completed.
Last year, Warner/Chappell Music and the Gershwin estates made available to Wilson more than 100 piano demos of unfinished or obscure songs and melodies left by George Gershwin at his death in 1937. Wilson narrowed these fragments down to two favorites, then created new music blending both the Wilson and Gershwin styles.
The following is a complete track listing from Brian Wilson Reimagines Gershwin:

Like Gershwin, Brian Wilson is one of the great American composers of the last 100 years. The Southern California native, along with his brothers, a cousin and a friend, formed the Beach Boys while still in his teens. With Wilson as chief songwriter and arranger, the band not only enjoyed dozens of hits, but changed music forever thanks to Brian's innovative melodies and harmonies. Songs like “I Get Around,” “Help Me, Rhonda,” “California Girls,” “Wouldn't It Be Nice,” and the #1 smash “Good Vibrations” remain indispensable staples in the rock 'n' roll canon. The band's “Pet Sounds” (1966) is regarded as one of the greatest albums of all time.
Wilson continued to make great music after the Beach Boys, with 10 solo albums including his breathtaking “Brian Wilson Presents SMiLE,” which he began recording in the 1960s and finally completed in 2004 to thunderous critical acclaim and Top 20 chart success (as well as earning a Grammy). A member of the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame, the Songwriter's Hall of Fame, a Kennedy Center honoree and recipient of multiple Gold and Platinum records, Brian Wilson has earned his well-deserved pop music immortality.

One of the songs, "Don't Fight The Sea" was recorded in the late 70s/80 fora proposed environmentally themed solo album between Jardine and Mike Love, but was never completed. Though the song was not intended for the Beach
Boys, the guys were, nevertheless, happy to lend their voices to it. It is a timely theme in this year of the Gulf oil spill, and global warming.
Throughout the years, Jardine has written and produced most of the ecological and social-themed songs for Beach Boys albums, including the "California Saga" suite from the group's 1973 Holland album, "Don't Go Near the Water" and "Lookin' At Tomorrow."
Also appearing as a special guest in an impromptu video is actor Alec Baldwin, who currently stars as Jack Donaghy on the hit NBC sitcom 30 Rock. On the track, "Tidepool Interlude," Baldwin is seen reading a moving tribute to California and its natural beauty written by Stephen John Kalinich as Jardine produces the session.
The video will also be released on Jardine's web site and YouTube Tuesday, June 29.

Mike & Bruce are headed to Australia at the end of January to play a series of symphonic shows in Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth & Sydney. These dates follow on from a short tour of Japan (20th-24th) and a one-off show in Manilla (Phillipines). They return to the US via Hawaii, playing two shows in Honolulu (see tour pages). Later in the summer, the band will be playing gigs in both Ireland and Sweden, one of which will be at the ancestral home of Mike & Brian's Swedish forebearers. No UK dates have been announced, but one can always hope...
Brian has done with touring for now, and is continuing to work on the Gershwin project, although he is playing a one-off show on the 23rd in San Francisco. It's a private show, however, open only to those who have bought the $1500 limited edition box set of THAT LUCKY OLD SUN. BTW, that $1500 is the *lowest* priced 'ticket' !
Alan's long-awaited/delayed solo album looks set for release this year, and will be previewed by an iTunes downloadable EP in the spring.
Billy Hinsche has released his latest DVD, 1974: the subject is the 1974 Beach Boys US spring tour and for all fans it's a fascinating glimpse backstage and behind the scenes. Some footage is familiar, but the vast majority of it is new. Highly recommended - further details here: http://www.billyhinsche.com/1974/index.html. Billy has stated that his next DVD project will concern Carl Wilson.
Jon Stebbins will be penning the Beach Boys entry in Backbeat Books popular FAQ series. The Beach Boys title will be among the most extensive volumes in the series with Stebbins meticulously investigating the entire 50-year history of the band. The approximately 400-page book will be illustrated with rare photos and memorabilia images. Jon also has a revised and updated edition of his Dennis Wilson – The Real Beach Boy book in the works, as well as a new collaboration in development with New York writer Howie Edelson. The Beach Boys FAQ will be the first of the three books to see release, as Backbeat expects it in the market prior to The Beach Boys 50th anniversary year of 2011.
Brian's just finished his US tour, and (after a slightly stiff start), the shows developed into some of the very best of his solo career, with BW playing more keyboard than he has in the ten years since 1999 ! Next up is a series of four shows in California & Nevada in early December, after which the band will reportedly return to the studio to continues with the Gershwin sessions. Prior to embarking on this recent jaunt, Brian and the band spent a few days in Oceanway (the old Western) studio, recording seven basic tracks for an album tentatively titled Wilson Sings Gershwin: these included "I Loves You Porgy", "Summertime", "Someone to Watch Over Me", "Let's Call The Whole Thing Off", "I Got Plenty Of Nothing" and 'the pretty section from "Rhapsody in Blue"'. The album is set for a 2010 release on Disney's Pearl label and will very probably be toured. The sessions are being filmed for a DVD/TV special, and according to both the band and others in the know, went exceedingly well. The album will also include two previously unfinished Gershwin songs that Brian has been commissioned to complete by the Gershwin Estate. Brian's deal with Disney (which was signed back in the summer) calls for a second album of covers of Disney movie classics.
Mike & Bruce's touring Beach Boys are headed to Brazil for a show in Sao Paulo in early December, and overseas again late January/early February for a series of symphonic shows in the Australian cities of Melbourne, Brisbane & Sydney.
Alan continues to work on his solo album, Postcard From California (four years and counting...), and plans to have a downloadable taster EP out in December, and possibly a seasonal single also. Hopefully that's December this year...
2011: the 50th Anniversary - what's going to happen ? Well, if anyone knows, they're not saying, although a recurring rumour is that the band will reform - that is, Mike, Bruce, Brian, Alan & David - for a February 6th 2011 show marking the 100th anniversary of the birth of former president Ronald Regan. Other than this, nothing concrete has been mentioned, but surely there has to be something in the works.
Released a few months ago, Christmas Harmonies is another reworking of 1998's Ultimate Christmas CD, combining tracks from the 1964 Capitol release and the 1977 sessions at MIU. There's nothing new: for completists only.
